Getting started
- Open the app and allow camera access when asked. You can change it later in iOS Settings › Card Validator › Camera.
- Hold the phone steady over the PDF417 barcode on the card, filling most of the scan frame.
- Good light and a flat card help the most. Glare on a laminated card is the usual cause of a slow scan.
- After a successful scan, each decoded field is listed with a label so you can compare it with the printed card.
The barcode won't read
- Wipe the card and try again at a slight angle to cut glare.
- Move closer until the barcode fills the frame, and hold still for a moment.
- Some cards are printed or photocopied in a way that damages the barcode. If another barcode reader also fails, the barcode itself is likely unreadable.
Camera shows nothing
Camera access is probably off: iOS Settings › Card Validator › Camera, then restart the app.
What the app does and doesn't do
Card Validator reads and labels the data stored in the barcode on an insurance card. It does not scan the printed text or image of the card, and it does not contact any insurer or database. It is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by any government agency or insurance company. Always verify results against the physical card.
